Social Media: Research & Development

This blogpost will include our social media research and development for our star, which Saka and Me made. 

Our first idea was to post pictures of our Star during holidays and random pictures of his daily

life, but it turns out we weren’t allowed to use pictures taken during holidays. 


This was the first draft:

So this is the Instagram account removing all the holiday pictures:




This is the result of the final change without adding the album cover and anything related to the music video except a little sneak peek on the latest post. 

After adding the final digipak design and album, this is our social media post to promote our

product that would be able to target the audience.



We have a total of 8 posts on our social media that aim to target the audience and reflect our

star’s persona, creating an image that reflects the characteristics and personality of our star. 




We chose to use that one goofy and silly picture of our star to show his playful side aside from

his ‘daily-life’ posts.

- Feels a bit of both 


- It's because the posts are made from someone else but the caption feels like Billie Eilish type

them herself (shown in the expressive captions)


Do fans have the chance to interact and engage with a. The artist? b. Other fans?

- Yes, fans have the chance to interact with Billie Eilish since Instagram (a social media

application) allows fans to use the comment section to type their messages and through this,

they can connect with the artist. 


How does the artist promote their music?

- Bilie Eilish promotes her music by uploading posts related to it such as the highlights of her

performing on stage to show the high energy and excitment in the concert; consistently posting

pictures of her newest album cover "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT" so the audience are reminded

about it; and uploading a informative post about the locations and time of her next tour so her

fans are aware of it and thus promotes her music.


How has this social media influenced you?

- It gives us an idea on what to post, such as random pictures of our artist (with distressed poses

and at dim locations) to show his sad persona.

- Yes
- The categories are:
    1) Promotional of upcoming live events
    2) Promotion for their merch
    3) Behind the scenes for the producing their songs (in the studio)
    4) Pictures and Videos that highlights their performances on stage


Does it feel personal or is someone else creating cotent for them?
- It feels like someone else is creating content for them as there was no posts of Imagine Dragons speaking directly into the camera, for a video, so their posts doesn't feel personal.


Do fans have the chance to interact and engage with a. The artist? b. Other fans?
- Yes fans have the chance to interact and engage with Imagine Dragons through Instagram. This is because Instagram allows fans to use the comment section so that they can type their

messages, in each Instagram post, to interact with the artist. Also, there is a feature to send a

direct message to the artist so the fans can communicate with them one on one. 


- Fans of Imagine Dragons can also interact with other fans in the comment section of a

promotional post of a song called "Take Me to the Beach". This song features Ado (a Japanese

singer and songwrite) and both fans from Imagine Dragons and Ado can interact with one

another by sharing their interests in this post.


How does the artist promote their music?

- By uploading posts related to the upcoming live perfomances that contain information

regarding the event such as the location, the songs that are going to be played, and posting them

consitently in their page so their audience are reminded of the event. 


How has this social media influenced you?

- It gives us an idea how high quality pictures/videos to post reflects the artist persona. Such as

Imagine Dragons post high quality images of their performances and events to attract their

audience to join their next live event and it creates a professional representation of their band.

- It feels like someone else creates content for them as they don't seem close or interact directly

with their audience (such as not talking to the camera for a video).


Do fans have the chance to interact and engage with a. The artist? b. Other fans?

- Instagram allows fans to use the comment section to interact with the artist,  also Instagram

has a feature to send a direct message to the artist - which further increases interactivity. 


- There weren't much engagement with other fans in Artic Monkey's Instagram page


How does the artist promote their music?

- They upload posts related to the music such as a short clips of their music video, videos of them

performing on stage and uploading informative posts of their world tour so that their audience

are up to date for Artic Monkey's next concerts. 


How has this social media influenced you?

- It gives us an idea on how artirst like Artic Monkeys inform their audience of upcoming events

in their world tour and we might implement that for our artist, Do0d.


Making this research on social media helps us identify the conventions or the consistent approaches of what artists in the Indie genre post on their social media. We saw some that were funny and some serious pictures like Joji where he has goofy pictures and actual photoshoots to show that artist has a second identity with a completely different personality. Their personality is judged by what they post on their social media, and we chose to follow what Joji posts, representing the double identity of our star. The problem we faced was that we weren't allowed to use pictures taken on our personal holidays, we realised this after posting some pictures in our social media and caused us to delete the post and do some photoshoot to post on our social media.

What brand identity are they giving off?

Joji is trying to give off a dark, but humorous and easy going brand image. In his social media posts he

usually posts either dark images of him or basically casual images of him. But so far in his albums, all

of them are dark coded.

What is their persona?

Joji gives off a mysterious persona as he never really posts that much on instagram, if he does, its usually

with little context. Other than announcing his tours, where he puts links to his tickets and merchandise.

He just puts random captions or not a caption at all. In real life, he is pretty funny as he has a lot of fan

interactions where he has small jokes with them.

What image are they creating for themselves, how?

He is trying to create a mysterious, but exclusive image as he does not really post that much on social

media and only posts where it is important and rarely posts miscellaneous. But he also wants to be seen

as laid back as seen through his random snaps of himself. He is also trying to create the image that he is

a dark, gloomy being as in his album covers he rarely smiles, 

How do they speak to their fans?

He is a former comedian and has a lot of humorous interactions of fans , whether at fan meetings and

concerts. He is known to be a very laid back and easy-going person among fans often cracking up jokes

at public appearances 

What visuals link all of the media products together?

Through colour, Joji wants to create this mysterious and dark being by combining dark themed filters at

his digipaks and his photoshoot for promotions. And through mise en scene through acting in his album

covers, he never smiles. Making the gloomy impression of himself stronger. He always uses a black

filter on every album cover

What brand identity are they giving off?

Billie's Brand identity is centered around emo, slow music that focuses on teenage identity, struggles

about life and love life as a young person. She is giving the brand identity of a teenager who wants to

know the world, but at the same time is handling their struggles. 

What is their persona? 

Billie has established a simple, laid back and very friendly and approachable persona on the media. She

is known to have a lot of nice fan interactions all around her tours as when she meets her fans she

usually lights up with a smile. This is also very depicted in her interviews with the media as she shows

her presumed genuine personality, in her products, she is described as this gloomy girl in a majority of

her music videos but in public she has frequently expressed herself using streetwear (baggy clothes) and

bright coloured green (her official logo)

What image are they creating for themselves, how?

She is trying to create an image that she is a teenager that is trying to figure out life through her

melancholy music and deep lyrics in her music videos. But in her public appearances she is this funny,

bubbly girl who is wholesome and sweet.

How do they speak to their fans?

She is famous for being a friendly, funny and bubbly kind of person when interacting with fans. She

often makes jokes that are very funny and often connects with fans through speaking up about social

issues together. She joins comedy shows such as SNL (Saturday Night Live) frequently as a guest star,

not as a singer. Only making her singing appearance in 2023. 

What visuals link all of the media products together?

As she always brings herself to relate with teenage life darkness such as depression and teenage issues.

She mostly brings herself in her visuals with dark clothing, dark colour alongside dark colour grading in

her photos alongside social media. Her digipaks and album cover do not necessarily contain darkness

that is shown explicitly as there are still some bright coded albums. But in all of her cover photos, she

always has a distraught, or crazy expression. Which still conforms to the representation that teens are

losing their minds. 


This blog post was made by Bagus as we planned to split the tasks of social media, branding, and digipak among our group. I didnt really do anything aside from confirming his idea of choosing the artists in our branding blogpost to be Joji and Billie Eillish, as both artists are in the same genre as the music we chose for our music video. Indie. The problem I knew about with this post was connecting it with our branding. It was hard to follow the technique Joji and Billie are using as they were mostly using professional photoshoots while we just took a camera to take pictures of our actor. The solution was to edit the image to look as professional and follow the conventions.

Production: File organisation

 This is how me and my group organised the video clips for our project. This blogpost is made by Bagas.


We used our whatsapp group as a way to compile all the clips together ,since we recorded using different phones. After it's compiled I will then download and organise the files on my desktop using file explorer. There is where I categorise the clips according to its location such as school and its bagus’s house.






Advantages of using whatsapp:

  • Easy to connect and send

  • We can discuss things as we send 

  • Being in a group allows all of us to view the clips 


Advantages of using file explorer

  • Does not require an internet connection

  • Easy to access

  • Labeling feature makes it easier to locate video clips


Disadvantages of using whatsapp

  • Requires an internet connection 

  • Quality decreases when we send in whatsapp


Disadvantages of file explorer

  • The amount of things you can put in depends on how much storage you have on your laptop, so if your laptop is full then the less amount of video clips you can put in 



Organising the file was the work of all of us but the blogpost was made by bagas. We try to send everything we recorded on that day in order to not confuse the editor. This will also help when trying to sort out which scenes comes first in the music video and could align with our storyboard to make sure which scene should be first and which scene goes next.
