Stuart Hall Representation Theory

This is research I did according to Stuart's Hall theory

Representation theory

- Representation theory means that media does not reflect meaning but instead creates meaning for the audience.

What is a stereotype?

Stereotypes are repeated representations of social groups or an object in the media to generalize different beliefs of different groups of people. Stereotypes are used to help the audience connect more to the media and understand the meaning of what is being shown better.

Social groups represented:

Different social groups are being displayed in different ways in the media

Two social groups

High school graduates

Negative: Noisy, nuisance, causing traffic, disturbing other drivers, breaking the rules,

Mis-en-scene: Crowded, exciting, students, chaotic shown by the number of graduates in the picture

Reason: The reason this is shown is to warn other students about the consequences of celebrating graduation with convoys. Even after graduation, there are still rules and regulations to be followed.

How the audience receives it: According to the reception theory by Stuart Hall, the message will have different meanings for different social groups. The teenage group celebrating graduation with these kinds of events will be as cheerful and lively as the older audience, the way they celebrate their graduation goes against basic rules and laws implemented and will only cause chaos.

Representation theory helped me determine the target audience and how to represent them in my magazine. The different writing ways/words I need to use to connect with the target audience i have chosen.
